EAA Condemns Attack on School in Myanmar’s Central Sagaing region
Media reports that at least 11 children, some as young as seven, and several staff members died in the September 16 attack.
Attacks on education in Myanmar have increased sharply over the last two years, making Myanmar one of the worst affected countries in the world in overall number of incidents. Between 2020 and 2021, more than 200 attacks were reported. Myanmar also registered a high number of incidents in that time period where schools were used for military purposes making students and teachers highly vulnerable to violence.
News of this latest unconscionable act comes only days after the International Day to Protect Education from Attack on September 9. During the event in Paris, Education Above All led a call to all stakeholders to move beyond words and to fully implement UNSCR 2601 that calls for accountability, by enacting national action plans to ensure schools remain safe spaces. Education is a basic human right and must remain accessible, even during conflict.
