CHANGING LIVES – Laiba
Child marriages are still a common practice in rural areas of Pakistan. Laiba is a girl from the Swat district of Pakistan, whose mother wanted to get her married as soon as she finished primary school. After IFERB was launched in Laiba’s School, her mother attended the orientation session and helped her in completing the 12 projects over a span of 3 months. Though initially wary, her mother was surprised by Laiba’s intelligence and creativity demonstrated in her projects.
Laiba’s keen interest in excelling in both academics and in extracurricular activities, convinced her mother to reconsider her decision regarding the marriage. She decided to take a stand for her daughter and tackle all challenges to ensure Laiba’s marriage is delayed till she completes her education. She also intends to convince other mothers in the community to let their daughters receive an education to give them an opportunity for a better life and financially secure future.
