Opening up a world of education

Children love to learn. If they are denied access to knowledge, we also deny them the opportunity to change their lives for the better.

Salma: A Pioneer — A First-generation Learner

Calendar icon

In the rolling hills of the Himalayas, where whispers of ancient trees mingle with the songs of unseen birds, there lives a spirited soul named Salma. She is just ten years old and belongs to the Van Gujjar community, a nomadic tribe whose way of life intertwined closely with the rhythms of nature. Salma, however, is a pioneer in her own right—a first-generation learner in her family, defying odds that often dictated different paths for girls her age.

Each morning, as the first light kissed the treetops, Salma was already awake, her school bag slung over her shoulder in eager anticipation. While many of her peers were occupied with household chores or tending to younger siblings, Salma's heart danced with excitement for the day's adventures at school. Her eyes sparkled with curiosity, and her laughter echoed through the forest paths as she skipped along, cherishing every step towards knowledge.

Salma's passion for stories was a secret she shared only with her books. In the quiet moments before dawn, she would lose herself in tales of brave princesses and daring adventurers, imagining herself as the heroine conquering dragons and saving kingdoms. Her love for art was equally profound; with coloured pencils and sheets of paper, she brought to life the vibrant world she envisioned beyond the mountains. Despite the challenges that loomed large for girls in her community—often destined to forsake their education for familial duties—Salma thrived. Her resilience and determination were whispered about among the elders, who marvelled at her unwavering spirit.

A facilitator once described her as “सलमा एक ऐसी लड़की है , जो किसी चुनौती से पीछे नहीं हटती। शुरू शुरू में सलमा इतना इन्वॉल्वमेंट नहीं रखा करती थी। पर जब से वह Library Management Committee Member बनी उसका आत्मविश्वास बढ़ा साथ ही साथ कक्षा में भागीदारी भी । चाहे वो घर से करके लाने का कोई काम हो ,या फिर कक्षा में कोई गतिविधि। वह काफी अच्छा करने लगी है।" ("Salma is a girl who never backs down from any challenge. Initially, Salma wasn't very involved. But since she became a member of the Library Management Committee, her confidence has grown, and she actively participates in classroom activities as well. Whether it's bringing tasks from home or participating in class activities, she has started doing very well.")

It was through the Library Management Committee set up by Samanta that Salma truly found her voice. Initially reserved, she blossomed into a confident leader, her self-assurance growing with each responsibility shouldered. Whether it was ensuring every book was meticulously shelved or actively participating in classroom activities, Salma became a beacon of enthusiasm and dedication. Her classmates admired her initiative, and teachers praised her for her diligence.

In the classroom, Salma's hand shot up eagerly at every opportunity. She had become the embodiment of engagement, whether eagerly volunteering to fetch supplies from home or leading her peers in creative projects. Her transformation from a shy observer to an active participant was a testament to her evolving confidence and deepening love for learning. She explored an inner author within herself while doing a project called Be Your Own Author. Her love for expressing herself through creativity got wings through many activities conducted under project-based learning. She discovered this love while engaging in various project-based learning activities. The project called My ID Card was one of the first projects Salma participated in, and she created magic with her creativity. Her ID card had many things beyond a conventional card, it included her favourite color, the picture of her best friend and her book.

As she grew, Salma dreamed of a future where she could bridge the gap between her community's traditions and the wider world of knowledge. She envisioned herself as a storyteller, weaving together the tales of her people with the wisdom she gained in school. With each passing day, her dreams grew larger, fueled by the belief that education was not just a path for personal growth but a beacon of hope for her entire community.

Salma's journey is a testament to the power of determination and the boundless potential that blossoms when a young mind is nurtured with love and opportunity. In the quiet corners of the forest, where the sunlight filtered through the leaves like blessings, Salma's laughter echoed—a reminder that against all odds, a girl with a heart full of dreams can illuminate even the darkest of paths.
