Dhaka Ahsania Mission
The Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM), founded in 1958, is one of the largest NGOs in Bangladesh that provides education and medical services to adults and children. It currently provides education to more than 60,000 children in non-formal schools. Its focus is primarily on rural areas, although it also operates in urban slums. It provides support in the form of teacher-training and quality improvement programs to 200 formal schools. As part of an existing program with the European Commission, DAM currently runs more than 1,900 Children’s Learning Centers (CLC) (non-formal primary schools), predominantly in rural locations, in 26 districts across Bangladesh.
The Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) uses non-formal schools to reach out of school children from low-income families in Bangladesh. The DAM non-formal education model enrols students and provides five grades of education within four years, with one teacher teaching a class of 30 students in a single classroom school. DAM selects the locations for its non-formal primary schools or Children’s Learning Centers (CLCs) based on the areas of highest need, and the areas with the least access to education.
EAC and DAM have partnered to provide quality basic education to 40,000 Bangladeshi children who are currently out of school. The partnership will establish and train staff for 1,000 new Children’s Learning Centers in areas of the highest need. The partnership works in the districts of Noakhali, Chittagong, Netokona, Laxipur, and Mymenishgh, which have the lowest levels of education provision.
