Opening up a world of education

Children love to learn. If they are denied access to knowledge, we also deny them the opportunity to change their lives for the better.

History of Al Fakhoora

Al Fakhoora was founded in 2009 after the attacks in Gaza. It takes its name from a school in the Jabaliya refugee camp, where many families took refuge during the war. In the aftermath of the conflict, Al Fakhoora launched our first projects, a diverse set of initiatives ranging from rebuilding educational facilities damaged in the war, providing psycho-social support for children and youth, establishing vocational programmes for students with disabilities, and awarding holistic higher education scholarships to marginalised youth, enabling them to pursue undergraduates studies and complete their higher education.

Al Fakhoora’s focus became clear,

“To promote the right to education in conflict and post-conflict regions, by unlocking a new generation of marginalised youth to become educated, professionally skilled, civically–engaged individuals who inspire and guide their families and communities towards cohesion and prosperity.”

In 2016, Al Fakhoora’s programme expanded to include marginalised Palestinians and Syrian internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugee youth. The global expansion covered six new regions, including the West Bank, and Syrian IDPs in Syria, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq with access to quality higher education through our unique holistic higher education and empowerment programme.

In 2020, Al Fakhoora began working on a new model, partnering directly with higher education institutions who are models of excellence in the MENA region and beyond, to provide further expand our reach to marginalised youth, refugees and IDPs, allowing them to access quality, relevant higher education.
